Honey Asian Style Wings

Wings are one of those foods I never really had growing up since they were white meat and therefore were snapped up by either my Mom or sister as they only liked white meat. DH and I love the deep-fried wings with garlic Parmesan sauce on them. I personally do not like frying foods myself although I love cooking fried wonton wrappers, sprinkled with powdered sugar. Unrelated to wings, is a chicken story I remember that happened to friends of my Mom & Dad. The friends were dealing with the wife’s mother who had come to live with them. She sadly was suffering from a dementia type of illness. During the early stages, one time she knew her family was going to grill whole chickens on a rotisseri at a barbecue function. The family had bought both whole chickens as well as parts. So they were totally surprised when they came home and walked into the kitchen and found her trying to sew the chicken parts back together with a needle and thread. It was one of those scenes that were both hilariously funny and very sad too.

Ingredients:

  • 15 whole wings
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons Hoison sauce
  • 1/2 cup Teriyaki sauce
  • 1-2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce (optional; plus/minus; to taste)
  • Cooking spray

Directions:

  1. Use a sharp knife and cut the wings down into 3 pieces at the joints. (I give the wing tip section or flipper to my MIL to help flavor her soups).
  2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  3. Add honey, Hoison sauce, teriyaki sauce and (optional sweet chili sauce) to a sauce pan.
  4. Cook for 10 minutes on low stirring frequently.
  5. Use non-stick aluminum foil and line a jelly roll pan which is similar to a cookie sheet with sides.
  6. Place chicken wings skin side down, spray with cooking spray, and bake for 20 minutes.
  7. Turn wing pieces over with skin side up, and bake for additional 30 minutes.
  8. Drain drippings from pan.
  9. Microwave sauce for 1 minute, stir.
  10. Place wings in a bowl and toss with sauce.
  11. Place wings back on pan with skin side down and broil about 10″ away from heat for 5 minutes (I place the broiling pan with wings on a middle high rack instead of the highest rack).
  12. Turn wings over with skin side up and broil an additional 5 minutes.
